In early 2009 I quit a very lucrative career at a mid-sized web development company to start BizSiteNow LLC. Having built many websites over the years for my previous employer, I was appalled at the high-prices that clients were being charged.

Most of the clients I worked with were struggling small business owners that, quite honestly, were being taken advantage of. In some egregious cases, my former company was charging clients $5,000 for a website that cost us only $500 to build.

And instead of suggesting proper Flash animation solutions, we were advised to over-sell clients on bloated *Full* Flash websites that we could charge a premium for, but ranked horribly on Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. (Why is *Full* Flash so bad?).

I wish I could say that my old employer was an isolated example, but unfortunately, most web development companies today function in the same way: over-charging & over-selling.

Social networks, blogs, and email are now free due to technological innovation, yet the average cost of a business website has risen to an all time high of $3,400. Why is this?

The answer is simple: While technology is making everything cheaper, business owners are increasingly more ignorant about what they are being sold, and web development firms are making fatter profit margins.
